Mary Ann Waffle

  • From family information it is said that she was an "inmate" of the House of Industry at Athens, ON before she died and was quite elderly at the time.
    
    She is listed as Mary Ann in the 1851 census of N. Crosby, age 16.
    
    In the 1861 census of N. Crosby she is listed as "Marian" age 24, single, with her father George Waffle's family.

    In 1871 she is with (shown as married, but no record found yet) GeorgeWilson and living in N. Crosby Twp.  next door to her sister Rachael's husband's Whitmarsh family.  3 oldest children from that source.
    
    The Fluke marriage record only serves to confuse the issue.  Her husband George Wilson was born at sea and he was the same approx age.  If she married George Fluke in 1868, whose children are the ones born afterward?  Only the eldest dau precedes their marriage date.  Who does SHE belong to??
    
    There were 2 other Mary Ann Waffles in N. Crosby--one the wife of her brother George Jr. but I have them together with their family in the 1871 census.  The other Mary Ann was Noah's wife and I also have them as a family in 1871, so neither could be the one who married George Fluke.  And the parents of the bride narrow it down to this Mary Ann.
    
    Daughter Lillie's birth in 1873 was registered with the surname FLUKE and it states her mother's maiden name as Mary Waffle.  I have added her to the family to keep them all together, until the mystery of the husbands is solved.
    
    In 1881 Mary Ann is in N. Crosby, listed as married, but with no husband in the household listing.  She has "Asmina" age 17, George age 12, William age 6, Bertha age 4 and Ida age 1.  I have figured out that Ida was the granddaughter of her brother George Jr. (dau of his son Thomas J.) as I found her birth and her marriage records which state that.I think the census taker assumed that Ida was a Wilson since she wasliving with the Wilsons.  She's the only Ida who fits that age and place.
    
    However, her daughters Edith and Elizabeth are both living with other families in 1881, probably having to work for their keep.
    
    Also I cannot find a George Fluke OR a George Wilson with correct birth info in the 1881 or 1901 censuses in Canada or the U.S.  Nor is MaryAnn showing up as a Wilson in 1901.   There is a George Fluke in Toronto in 1881 who is younger, originally from S. Elmsley.
    
    Finally found her in 1901 with the name of Littlejohn, with Robert Littlejohn in N. Crosby.  Birthdate from that source.  Her son William Wilson is working on the next farm in the same census.
    
    Clue to the Littlejohn name from Ron Tackaberry.  He found a Mrs. Littlejohn who died in 1935 at the House of Industry at Athens, which is where Mary Ann supposedly lived at death and she was supposed to be over 90, which also fits Mrs. Littlejohn's age.  Death date from House ofIndustry records obtained by Ron T. Jan 2007.
    
    She is with Robert Littlejohn again in 1911, this time in Elgin, ON.  Birthdates for her and Robert are way off from earlier censuses for each of them.
    
    Still attempting to track the children's whereabouts after 1881, as ofFeb 2007.
