Denis James Beaudry

    The following is taken from "Memories of the Latreille-Beaudry-Carre Families" written by Louise (Carre) Martel 16 October 1996.
    
    Denis Beaudry, son of Amable Beaudry and Catherine Stoqua was born 5 November 1861 in Osceola, near Pembroke, Ontario. He had six brothers: Jack, Frank, Joseph (Vernon BC), Baptiste, Laurent and another one whom I have not found in my research. Most of his brothers had worked in Lumber Camps around and north of Ottawa.
    
    Of these seven men, I knew three of them. Besides Denis, my Grandfather, and Jack, Frank was the one I knew the best.
    
    My Grandfather Denis was a handsome man with black curly hair and brown eyes. He was tall, strong, authoritative and demanding qualities which gave him the reputation of a good foreman, especially in the lumberbusiness.
    
    He was knowledgeable in the workings of a lumber camp and spring drives which took the logs down rough and dangerous rivers to the sawmills and other destinations on large bodies of water (in this case Lake Huron). Energetic, skilled and perseverant, he worked without reprieve and obtained good co-operation from his workers. He was employed by E.B.Eddy Company of Hull, Quebec; one of the kings of the forest industry. This company was cutting in the Georgian Bay and Massey areas.
    
    Denis arrived in the region about 1887 via the water route. He met andbefriended Thomas Latreille and his family and eventually married Marie Louise Latreille, in 1889, the same year that the church was built in Massey. As there was no resident priest in Massey, the mission under the responsibility of the Jesuit Fathers who visited their parishioners about once every two or three months.
    
    While Denis continued working in the lumber camps, Marie-Louise raisedher family using all the homemaker's skills that she had learned while staying with that beloved family, the McGregor's. Besides taking care of her children and doing the household chores, she put in a small garden for fresh fruit and vegetables.
    
    Denis was a caring man and always took an intrest in the family's welfare. On one of his visits home from work, Denis asked Marie-Louise howthings were going. Loretta who was sitting on her father's knee started relating the events that had taken place during his absence. Denis stopped her fondly, "Let your mother tell me." This is how I remember my grandfather: kind and Interested.
