For, don't you mark ? we're made so that we love First when we see them painted, things we have passed Perhaps a hundred times nor cared to see ; And so they are better, painted — better to us, Which is the same thing. Art was given for that ; God uses us to help each other so, Lending our minds out. - Page 367

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. - Page 115

They went out from us, but they were not of us ; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us : but they went out that they might be made manifest how that they all are not of us. - Page 68

The beauty and the wonder and the power, The shapes of things, their colours, lights and shades, Changes, surprises, - and God made it all! - For what? do you feel thankful, ay or no, For this fair town's face, yonder river's line, The mountain round it and the sky above, Much more the figures of man, woman, child, These are the frame to? - Page 367
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. - Page 34
I stood at Naples once, a night so dark I could have scarce conjectured there was earth Anywhere, sky or sea or world at all : But the night's black was burst through by a blaze— Thunder struck blow on blow, earth groaned and bore, Through her whole length of mountain visible ; There lay the city thick and plain with spires, And, like a ghost disshrouded, white the sea. So may the truth be flashed out by one blow, And Guido see, one instant, and be saved. - Page 210
Any New Testament Bible student should ... ... be aware of The Epistles of St. John by B. F. Westcott. It is a standard reference that while old has tremendous range of usefulness. Westcott demonstrates textual critical techniques without insulting the text and its meaning. Following the pattern of identifying how this text or that uses a different word or phrase here or there is the center of seeing what the book is saying from the light of how those closer to it had seen it. Westcott’s conclusions and some interpretive matters may have become obsolete here or there, yet just as the Scriptures he explores, so very much is distinctly unambiguous and understandable. I have read more than a few such often times archaic biblical texts of Westcott’s contemporaries, but his is so much more readable and still largely current to contemporary readers. It is worth wading through for those unaccustomed to the ‘old speak’ of the previous two centuries. If there were only commentaries by such past stars as Clark, Vine, Wesley, or Westcott on a book shelf, I would first pick up Westcott. There is substance in this book on John’s letters that is sometimes missed or often glossed over in books a century more current, yet it shows a reverent practice of contemporary critical methods that sometimes need to be rediscovered.
